Volleyball Sweeps Ball State for First Win in Muncie Since 1989

MUNCIE, Ind. -- At long last the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team was able to notch a victory here Saturday evening in John E. Worthen Arena, sweeping Ball State University (30-15, 30-14, 30-19). The win is the Eagles' first-ever in the 15-year history of Worthen Arena and the first since EMU posted a 3-2 decision Oct. 14, 1989. The season sweep of the Cardinals is also the first for the Eagles since 1986 and just the third in the program's history.

With the victory, EMU ups its record to 17-10 and 7-5 in the Mid-American Conference while Ball State drops to 3-21 (2-10 MAC). EMU also remains in a tie for second place in the West Division with Central Michigan, as both squads are 7-5 in the conference this year.
The EMU offense, which finished with a .320 attack percentage, was led by senior Katie Bates (Delta, Ohio-Evergreen) with 12 kills, two blocks, two digs and a .585 attack percentage (12-2-17). Senior Becky Reenders (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven) collected 14 kills, seven digs, five total blocks and a .310 hitting percentage (14-5-29). Senior setter Kate Sulewski (Ottawa Lake, Mich.-Bedford) added a matchbest 34 set assits digs.
Individually for Ball State, sophomores Abby Lavinge posted a team-high eight kills, while Christine Kennedy and Elaina Kaketolis chipped in six.
The Eagles return home for the next three matches beginning Friday, Nov. 2, against defending MAC West Division champion Northern Illinois before hosting current West leader Western Michigan Saturday, Nov. 3. Eastern closes out the home portion of the schedule Thursday, Nov. 9, with senior night verus Central Michigan. All three matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
