Volleyball Zips Past Akron on Dig For the Cure Night

Eagles tally 63 digs on the night for cancer research

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team swept Mid-American Conference rival Akron, 3-0 (30-19, 30-21, 30-20), Saturday night here at the Convocation Center during the "Dig For the Cure" match. With the victory the Eagles even its record at 5-5 in the MAC and 15-10 overall, while the Zips fall to 9-14 and 1-9 in league play.
An event to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation -- which allowed fans to pledge donations per Eastern Michigan dig -- turned into an offensive display on both sides of the net, as the Eagles slammed 43 kills in the three-game set. Sophomore libero Kim Jarzynka (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Baldwin) did the best for per-dig pledges, leading all EMU players with 18 digs. Senior Abby Reenders (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven) tallied 14 and senior Kate Sulewski (Ottawa Lake, Mich.-Bedford) added 12.
Abby Reenders finished with a team-high 11 kills to go along with eight total blocks (5 solo, 3 assisted). Sister Becky Reenders (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven) notched nine kills on 27 swings, while sophomore Victoria Randolph (Cincinnati, Ohio-Mount Notre Dame) added seven kills and nine digs.
Akron was keyed by Brionna Patterson, who finished with a double-double that included 12 kills and 18 digs. Megan Rodriguez tallied a match-high 23 digs out the team's total of 70.
The Zips struggled offensively, hitting just .045 compared to .143 for the host Eagles.
Eastern Michigan returns to West Division action Friday, Oct. 26, in Toledo, Ohio against the University of Toledo. EMU then makes the trek to Muncie, Ind. Saturday, Oct. 27, for a rematch with Ball State University. First serve for both matches is set for 7 p.m.
