Sophomore Ashley Rodrigues nets three goals, one assist
YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University women’s soccer team beat the University at Buffalo 7-1 today here at Scicluna Field. The Eagle offense erupted for seven goals, the most ever against a Division I opponent and the most since EMU scored eight goals in 1998.
With the win, the Eagles move to 5-5-4 (3-2-2 MAC) on the year, while Buffalo falls to 4-9-2 (1-5-1 MAC).
Buffalo would strike first, when sophomore Caitlin Hughes took a header from Martina Pettenuzzo to put the Bulls up 1-0 five minutes into the contest.
The Eagles responded to the early hole by scoring seven unanswered goals. Sophomore Ashley Rodriuges evened the score a little over three minutes later off an Ashley Upton assist. Rodrigues was not done scoring, as she netted another goal three minutes later. Junior Katie Zundel was credited with the helper after dribbling around the goalkeeper.
The Eagles and Rodrigues scored one more time before the half, when Maggie Christensen found Rodrigues for her third goal of the afternoon. She is the first player since Michele Lawrence in 2005 and just the fourth Eagle overall to record a hat trick.
Coming out after halftime, the Eagles continued to attack as freshman Stephanie Janssens scored her first collegiate goal off a pass from Rodrigues. Rodrigues set the EMU single game record for scoring in this game with a total of seven points.
EMU would tack on three more goals, with Christensen scoring her sixth goal of the season off Janssens’ seventh assist of the season. Freshman Paige Sheridan scored her second goal of the season and assisted on Carissa Wilson’s goal just one minute later.
The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 21 when they conclude their home stand with an afternoon match against Kent State. It will be senior day, as the Eagles will honor the seven seniors for their achievements and dedication. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.mCinematic Highlights: MBB vs. Oakland, Nov. 21, 2025
