EMU and Ohio battle to 1-1 tie at Scicluna Field

YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University women’s soccer team tied Ohio University, 1-1 this afternoon at Scicluna Field.  It was the second double overtime game in as many games for the Eagles, as they played Akron to a draw on Friday.
With the tie, EMU moves to 4-5-4 (2-2-2 MAC) on the season, as Ohio sits at 4-6-3 (4-1-1 MAC).
Ohio would strike first, when freshman Jackie Hanson took a pass from Amy Lower and found the back of the net from 25 yards out.
EMU would respond with a goal of its own just over six minutes later when sophomore Ashley Rodriuges scored off a pass from Ashley Upton and Stephanie Janssens.  The rest of the first half would see both teams tighten up defensively to head into halftime knotted at one.
The second half saw both teams come out attacking, but the defenses were able to hold their ground.  Both teams continued to play physical, as the second half saw the two teams whistled for 18 fouls.  The game remained tied at one heading into overtime.
In the first overtime period, the teams continued their deadlock play.  The Eagles best opportunity came early in the period, but Maggie Christensen pushed a shot wide right.  The Bobcats continued to press and saw a Lindsey Price shot saved by Maggie Manville.  Ohio had one last shot right before time expired, but Erika Schmitt’s shot sailed wide right to send the game to a second extra frame.
The second overtime saw Ohio control the ball for most of the period, recording three shots.  The Eagle defense remained tough, not allowing a goal as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.  Manville recorded nine saves en route to the double overtime tie.
The Eagles will continue their home stand as they return to action Friday, Oct. 19, when they play host to University at Buffalo.  Game time is set to start at 3 p.m.
