YPSILANTI, Mich.– The Eastern Michigan University women’s track and field team opened the indoor portion of its season Saturday, Jan. 6, in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan Open.

The Eagles competed in 10 of the 13 events, three of which had Eastern Michigan placing among the top three finishers. In the 60 meter dash, freshman Jade Messam (Tampa Bay, Fla.- Chamberlaine) finished third with a time of 8.04 seconds. Junior Porshia Pryor (Ypsilanti, Mich.- Ann Arbor Huron) placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.57, while Messam finished just behind her in third place (26.75).

Pryor also ran the best time for the Eagles in the 400-meter dash, placing third overall (59.16). Sophomore Lindsay-Ann Bourne (Ypsilanti, Mich./Baratasia Comprehensive Secondary) ran to a seventh place finish in the same event (1:04.39).

Other Eagles’ top finishers in track events included junior Kalli Williams (Dexter, Mich.- Dexter) in the one mile run (6th, 5:16.34), freshman Sumon Joyner (Canton, Mich- Canton) in the 600-meter run (9th, 1:59.99), freshman Megan Flewelling (Grand Blanc, Mich.- Powers Catholic) in the 800-meter run (11th, 2:34.86) and freshman Haniel Gara (Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe- Lomagundi College) in the 60-meter hurdles (6th, 9.93).

The Eagles took sixth place out of eight in the 4x400 relay. In the pole vault competition, freshman Jessica Novakowski (Wixom, Mich.- Walled Lake Western) battled to a four-way tie for fourth place (10-feet-5.5 inches). Freshman Brittany Lockhart (Canton, Mich.- Salem) managed a sixth place finish in the long jump (15-feet- 11 inches), closing out the first meet of the new season.

Eastern will return to action next Saturday, Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. as they return home to the Bob Parks Track for the annual EMU Open. The meet is free and will feature both the men’s and women’s team. Come out and support your Eagles!
