Eagles led by seniors Thompson, Conklin and Lyssiotis

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team dropped its second consecutive Mid-American Conference match Wed. night, here at Warner Gym, 28-10 to Kent State University. EMU was lead by seniors Jermain Thompson (Akron, Ohio-Kenmore), Nick Conklin (Milton, Wisc.-Milton), and Tony Lyssiotis (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford).

"It was nice to have three of our seniors pick up wins tonight", said Head Coach Derek DelPorto.

The loss drops Eastern to (3-5, 0-2 MAC) while the No. 22nd ranked Golden Flashes of Kent State up their record to 10-1, 1-0 in MAC competition.

Kent State jumped out to an early 9-3 lead behind a 2-1 Eric Chine victory over John McClure (Holland, Mich.-West Ottawa) in the 184 lbs. contest and a Jermail Porter pin of senior Charlie Walker (Washington, Mich.-Romeo) in the heavyweight match. In the 197 lbs. match, Lyssiotis was able to hold off Ardian Ramadani for a 6-5 decision.

The Eagles would drop the next two matches of the night, including a forfeit in the 125 lbs. match to give Kent the 21-3 team score advantage. In the 149 lbs. contest, Thompson showed why he is ranked No. 17th in the country as he defeated Jason McGee, 6-4, to improve his record on the season to 16-9.

Kurt Gross would take the 157 lbs. match over Cory Mancuso (Brockway, Penn.-Brockway Area) by a 9-3 decision before Conklin would post the last Eagle victory of the night, a 12-2 major decision over Sli Bostelman in the 165 lbs. contest.

"Conklin keeps winning. He goes out there and never stops", said DelPoto of Conklin’s progression this season.

In the final match of the night, Aaron Miller defeated sophomore Don Funk (Jonesville, Mich.-Jonesville) by a 16-4 major decision in the 174 lbs. weight class.

The Eagles will continue action in the Mid-American Conference as they travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to take on the #7 ranked Central Michigan Chippewas. The match is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.
