Eagles Downed by No. 7 Chippewas

Mt. Pleasant, Mich. —The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team dropped its third Mid-American Conference match of the season tonight to No. 7 ranked Central Michigan University here at Rose Arena, 34-3.

With the loss the Eagles drop to 3-6, 0-3 MAC while Central improves to 13-4-1, 1-0 MAC.

In its first MAC match of the year Central Michigan jumped out to an early six point lead after a Luke Smith pin of Jack Cassady (Dearborn, Mich.-Dearborn) with seconds remaining in the second period. The Chippewas would take the next four matches from the Eagles as they built a 19-0 lead.

Senior Jermain Thompson (Akron, Ohio-Kenmore), who is ranked No. 18 in the latest Intermat/WIN rankings took the mat with the hopes of turning the meet around for EMU. After wrestling through a scoreless first period, Brandon Carter was able to earn one point on an escape which would prove to be the difference as he took the 149 lbs. match over Thompson, 1-0.

In the 165 lbs. match, senior Nick Conklin (Milton, Wisc.-Milton) squared off against No. 20 ranked Trevor Stewart. At the end of the first period, Conklin found himself down 2-1. Stewart would increase his lead in the second period by way of a one point escape and two point takedown, heading into the final period with a 5-1 advantage. Conklin would open the third period with a spark, earning one point for an escape before a two point takedown and three point near fall to take a 7-5 lead with one minute remaining. Stewart would add one point for an escape, closing the gap to 7-6, but that was as close as he would get as Conklin pulled away to win the match 11-7.

The Eagles could not muster much after Conklin's comeback victory, dropping the final four matches of the night. With the loss tonight, the Eagles have dropped the past 16 meetings against the Chippewas.

The Eagles will be in action next as they return home Feb. 3 for a dual match against the University at Buffalo. The match was moved to the Convocation Center late last week do to ongoing construction at Bowen Field House and is scheduled for a start time of 7 p.m.
