Sophomore Zu Voung wins Medalist Honors three-times

YPSILANTI, Mich.-- The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team defeated Bowling Green State University and Ursinus College in its home opener Saturday afternoon here at Warner Gym. The Eagles posted a score of 192.475 while the Falcons and Bears posted scores of 188.925 and 178.95, respectively.
With the victory, EMU begins the season 2-0, (1-0 MAC), while Bowling Green and Ursinus drop to 0-1.
The Eagles dominated every event at Warner Gym in route to first place on every rotation. On the vault, the first rotation for EMU, sophomore Zu Voung (Ottawa, Ontario-DelaSalle) and junior Tawna Bennett (Jacksonville, Fla-Edward White) shared first place honors with a 9.800 mark.
On the uneven bars Voung once again showed why she is the reigning MAC Freshman of the Year as she tied Sakura Tomita of Bowling Green for first place with a score of 9.775. Junior Jolene Worley (Orlando, Fla-William R. Boone) posted a score of 9.750, good for a third place tie with Ashlee DeLeeuw of Bowling Green.
In the third rotation the Eagles again had two girls tie for first place honors. Worley and senior Rebecca Fuss (Orlando, Fla-Dr. Phillips) recorded a winning mark of 9.675. Bethany Kenel of Bowling Green finished in third with a mark of 9.600.
For the second consecutive event, Worley found herself atop the leader board as she posted a 9.725 on the floor, good for a tie with teammate Nicole O'Hara (Florence,Ky-Boone County). Rounding out a top three sweep for the Eagles was Voung with a 9.625.
In the all-around competition, Voung and Worley bested the field, finishing one-two. With a score of 38.725, Voung took first place, her third medalist honor of the day. Worley finished in a close second with a score of 38.700.
The Eagles will pick up action Jan. 28 as they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. to take on the defending MAC Champion Broncos of Western Michigan. The meet is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time.
