Women’s Soccer Nipped by Ohio, 2-1

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Freshman Maggie Christensen (Orland Parks, Ill.-AA Stagg) notched her second goal of the season late in the game but the EMU women’s soccer team fell, 2-1, to visiting Ohio in Mid-American Conference action here at Scicluna Field.

The Eagles are now 4-3-2 (1-1 MAC) while Ohio improves to 4-5-0 (2-0 MAC).

During the first half, both teams relied on solid defense tallying only five total shots with no goals scored.

In the second half, Ohio’s offense struck first as Amy Lower knocked in a header on a feed from Erika Schmitt to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead at the 58:22 mark.

During the 80th minute, Deana Kinter (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) just missed getting the equalizer as her header beat Ohio goal keeper Jess MacLean but bounced off the crossbar.

Two minutes later, Ohio’s Halle Plagens broke free on a break away and scored to put the Bobcats up 2-0. However, EMU responded during the 83nd minute as Christensen connected on a shot from three yards out on an assist from Emi Cummings (Cincinnati, Ohio-Turpin) to cut the lead to 2-1. The Eagles kept applying pressure but was unable to tie the game.

EMU continues Mid-American Conference play in a road match against the University at Buffalo on Friday, Sept. 29 at 4 p.m.
