BUFFALO, N.Y. – Ashley Rodrigues (Pinkering, Ontario-St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary) notched her first career goal to help the Eastern Michigan women’s soccer team get off to a quick start but it was not enough as the Eagles could not hold a two goal lead and fell, 3-2, to the University at Buffalo here at UB Stadium. With the loss, EMU is now to 4-4-2 (1-2 MAC) on the season while Buffalo moves to 4-6 (1-2 MAC).
Eastern Michigan built a 1-0 first half lead as Rodrigues scored a one touch goal from the top of the box off a cross from freshman Maggie Christensen (Orland Parks, Ill.-AA Stagg) at the 16th minute. Freshman Deana Kitner (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) moved the Eagles ahead, 2-0, with a shot over UB goalkeeper, Amy Coron from sophomore Ashley Upton (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) at the 28:53 mark for her team leading fourth goal on the season. The assist was Upton’s second on the year.
In the 31st minute, Buffalo got on the board as sophomore Andrea Vescio settled a shot from sophomore Brooke McCalla off the cross-bar to score from the top of the box. Vescio struck again with another goal at the 53:23 mark to tie the score at 2-2.
Buffalo was able to get the game winner off a set piece as junior Amanda Couteau headed in a corner kick cross from junior Katie Fage for a 3-2 victory and its first conference win of the season.
EMU travels to Kent State for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, October 1.
