Sophomore Chris Ross claims medalist honors with a 146

CHARDON, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University men’s golf team won a rain-shortened Cleveland State Invitational here at the par 71, 7,155-yard Sand Ridge Golf Course, Sept. 11-12. The tournament's final round was cancelled due to unplayable conditions on the course. The start of the round was delayed by 30 minutes due to rain overnight but another band of showers moved through the area leaving the course unplayable.

During Monday's second round the Eagles carded a 287 to surge to the front of the 11-team field, posting a team score of 595 for the day (308-287). Eastern Kentucky University finished in second with a 596 (303-293) and The College of William and Mary came in third place with a team total of 604 (302-302).

Eastern Michigan put all five players in the tournament’s top 20, including medalist, sophomore Chris Ross (Dundas, Ontario-Parkside) at 146 (74-72). The victory was Ross' first career win and also marked his first top 10 finish in 13 tournament appearances. Ross, the Mid-American Conference's 2006 Freshman of the Year, turned in a previous best showing at the Hoya Invitational, Oct. 22-23, 2005, when he finished 11th with a one-over 145 (70-75).

The Eagles also had a quality performance from junior Joey Stimac (Burton, Mich.-Kearsley (Mott C.C.) who tied for seventh with a 150 (82-68). Other EMU scorers included junior Graham Hill (Brights Grove, Ontario/Northern Collegiate (Indiana (Pa.) with a 152 (78-74), senior Bryan Haase (Interlochen, Mich.-Interlochen (Lansing C.C) with a 153 (75-78) and freshman Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) with a 154 (81-73).
