IOWA CITY – Sophomore Katie Zundel (Utica, Mich.-Henry Ford ll) notched her first career goal but it was not enough as the EMU women’s soccer team fell, 2-1, in a hard fought match against Big Ten Conference foe Iowa here at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 2-2-1 while Iowa also improves to a 2-2-1 mark.
For the match, Iowa out shot EMU 15-10 and took a 1-0 lead as Kelsie Full connected on shot from 10 yards out to beat EMU goalkeeper Monique Budani (Whitby (Toronto), Ontario-Sinclair Secondary) at the 19:05 mark of the first half.
At the 40:43 mark, the Eagles responded with the equalizer on a set piece as Zundel scored on a header off a corner kick from senior Cyndi Mullins (Gahanna, Ohio-St. Francis DeSales).
The game remained tied until the 68:18 mark of the second half when Iowa sophomore Stephanie Hyink took an EMU clearance down the right wing and attempted to play the ball past a defender. The ball slid to the goal-line, nearly rolling out of bounds before Hyink could reclaim possession. Budani came off the line and a diving Hyink placed the ball to the opposite corner of the goal for the game-winner to seal the Hawkeye’s 2-1 victory.
