YPSILANTI, Mich. - Freshman Carissa Wilson (Linden, Mich.-Linden) scored her first her career goal in game winning fashion to lead the EMU women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Illinois State here at Scicluna Field in Ypsilanti, Mich. For the game, the Eagles connected on two goals on only six shots from the field.

With the win, EMU improvs to 3-2-1 on the season while Illinois State falls to 2-3-2.

EMU jumped to an early 1-0 lead at the 12:53 mark of the first half as Jessica Lathrop (Lawrence, Ind.-Lawrence North) notched her second career goal on a shot from 15 yards out on a feed from freshman Ashley Rodrigues (Pickering, Ontario-St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary). The assist was the first of Rodrigues’ career.

In the second half, Wilson scored on a shot from the right side off an assist from freshman Deana Kinter (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) at the 82:26 mark to give the Eagles a 2-0 late in the game. However, Illinois State would not go quietly as Bethany Ross scored in the 84th minute cutting the lead to 2-1. EMU was able to rely on its solid defense over the last six minutes to hold on for the victory.

EMU will host intra-state foe Michigan State at Scicluna Field on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 1 p.m.
