YSPILANTI, Mich. - The EMU women’s soccer team dropped its first game of the year and home opener to visiting Western Illinois, 1-0, here at Scicluna Field.
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 0-1-1 while the Westerwinds improve to 3-0-0 on the season.
Despite out shooting WIU, 15-12, with a 6-5 shots-on-goal advantage, EMU could not find the back of the net and found themselves behind early in the contest as Western Illinois junior Robyn Ruypers scored from the left side on a feed by Caitlin Barrett at the 11:08 mark giving WIU a 1-0 advantage.
The Eagles came out in the second half and applied pressure out shooting the Westerwinds 11-4 but WIU goalie Samantha Clark made three saves to preserve the shutout. Maggie Christensen (Orland Parks, Ill.-AA Stagg) led the Eagles with three shots while missing on two strikes that were just over the cross bar.
The Eagles host in-state foe Detroit at Scicluna Field on Sept. 1 at 5 p.m.
