Freshman have major impact with two goals and an assist
The EMU women’s soccer team kicked off the 2006 season by defeating Oakland, 2-0, in an exhibition game here at Scicluna Field in Ypsilanti, Mich.
Two talented freshman, Maggie Christensen (Orland Parks, Ill.-AA Stagg) and Ashley Rodrigues (Pickering, Ontario-St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary), led the way for the Eagles notching a goal each in their first colligate action. Christensen’s goal came at the 41:16 mark of the first half on a feed from Sara Shiffbauer (Westerville, Ohio-North). Rodrigues found the back of the net at the 89:13 mark of the second half with the assist going to yet another freshman, Deana Kinter (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc).
For the game, EMU out shot Oakland 20 to 17 with freshman goalie Monique Budani (Whitby (Toronto), Ontario-Sinclair Secondary) making six saves to preserve the shutout.
The Eagles officially open the season on Aug. 27 in a road match against IUPUI.
