Eagles tie season-high with 17 hits
Box score.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team tied a season-high with 17 hits, but it was not enough as the Eagles fell to cross-town rival Michigan, 11-6, here Tuesday afternoon at Ray Fisher Stadium.
EMU (26-21, 13-8-MAC) could not overcome untimely base running miscues and missed opportunities as the Eagles left nine runners on base. EMU was also caught stealing twice, picked off twice, and hit into two double plays.
Junior Derek Lehrman paced EMU going a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored. In addition, Matt Moffett went 2-for-5 with one run scored and a team-high three RBI while notching his team-leading seventh home run of the year. Sophomore Steve Bradshaw also went 3-for-5 at the plate with one RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Jeff Davis (1-3) picked up his third loss of the season allowing six runs in 2.0 innings.
Michigan (30-17, 16-8 Big Ten) was led by junior Eric Rose, who went 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored. Freshman Adam Abraham picked up his fourth win of the season on the mound.
Michigan got on the board first in the bottom of the opening frame as Kevin Cisco doubled to right-center field to plate the first run. An ensuing sacrifice fly by Doug Pickens scored another run to give the Wolverines an early 2-0 lead.
The Wolverines added another run in the second inning courtesy of a Rose triple which scored Jason Christian for a 3-0 advantage.
U-M kept the pressure in the third tallying another three runs on two hits to take a commanding 6-0 lead.
Eastern mounted a rally in the top of the fourth inning as Trumaine Riley ripped a bases loaded single into right field to score Jeff Hehr and Bradshaw cutting the lead to four, 6-2.
The Eagles kept chipping away as Moffett hit a towering two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 6-4. However, Michigan responded to get the run back in the bottom of the frame with a two-out single by Rose to increase its lead to 7-4.
Moffett pulled the Eagles closer, 7-5, with a single to score Lehrman from second base in the top of the eighth inning. Once again, EMU could not keep Michigan off the board as the Wolverines got another run on a RBI single to go up 8-5 in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, a routine fly ball was dropped by Eric Pelot that would have got EMU out of the inning. As a result, the Wolverines went on to tally three more runs to break the game open, 11-5.
Steve Bradshaw slammed a base hit to right field to plate Davis in the top of the ninth cutting the lead to 11-6. Hehr then reached on a fielder choice and Lehrman was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. The Wolverines dodged a huge bullet as Moffett hit another towering shot down the right field line but the umpire ruled it a foul ball to negate a grand slam home run. Moffett went on the strike out to end the game.
EMU returns to MAC action with a road weekend series against the University of Toledo. The first game is scheduled for Friday, May 12, at 3 p.m.
