Korey Mahoney wins Golfer of the Year while Chris Ross selected Freshman of the Year

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- On Saturday afternoon, Mid-American Conference men’s golf teams gathered at the championship banquet to celebrate each other’s season accomplishments. Eastern Michigan’s Korey Mahoney (East Lansing, Mich.-East Lansing) was selected as the MAC Golfer of the Year while Chris Ross (Dundas, Ontario/Parkside) was named the Freshman of the Year. Mahoney and Ross are the first-ever Eagles to collect the awards since their inception in 1994.

Mahoney has been one of EMU’s most consistent scorers in his four-year career for the Eagles. The East Lansing, Mich. native played in all 11 tournaments this season, averaging 72.09 strokes per round, the lowest average in the conference. Mahoney has seven top 10 finishes to his credit and has finished in the Top 25 in all but one tournament.

At the Wexford Intercollegiate, Feb. 27-28, Mahoney captured medalist honors with a seven-stroke victory total of 215 (70-71-74). He also fired a one-under 215 (68-73-74) at the Penn State Rutherford Intercollegiate, April 22-23, for the invitational championship. Mahoney tied for fourth at the Wolverine Intercollegiate with a six-under 207 (69-70-68) and fifth at the Hoya Invitational with a 143 (74-69). He carded a season-low 67 in the second round of the Xavier Invitational to finish ninth with a 54-hole total of 211 (70-67-74). For his career, Mahoney won four tournament titles, including two this season.

Ross had an outstanding first season in Ypsilanti as the lone EMU freshman to compete this season. The Dundas, Ontario native has played in all 11 tournaments this season. In 36 rounds, Ross averaged 74.56 strokes per round, the third lowest scoring average on the team.

Ross finished sixth at the Marshall Invitational, April 7-8, carding a 216 (71-70-75) to lead the Eagles to the tournament title. He shot his lowest round of the season, a 69, on the last day of the Wolverine Intercollegiate on his way to a 26th place finish. Ross has five top 20 finishes this year, including finishing 11th at the Hoya Invite, Oct. 22-23, with a 145 (70-75) and a 14th place finish at the South Alabama Springs Classic, March 13-14, by shooting a 221 (74-71-76). He tied for 17th at the Rutherford Intercollegiate, April 22-23, with a 54-hole total of 226 (76-76-74) and fired a 216 (69-74-73) en route to a 19th place finish at the Orange County National Invitational, March 4-5.

Kent State University mentor Herb Page was named Kermit Blosser MAC Coach of the Year after leading the Golden Flashes to their second consecutive championship. Ohio University senior Jon Johasky was given the Earl Yestingsmeier Sportsmanship Award to round out the awards.
