KENT, Ohio – Despite a solid effort from sophomore Jeff Fischer, the 2006 MAC Pitcher of the Year, the No. 6 seeded Eastern Michigan University baseball team was edged, 2-1, by No. 1 seeded Kent State University Wednesday afternoon here in first round Mid-American Conference Tournament action at Schoonover Stadium.
Fischer (9-4) went 8.0 innings with five strikeouts while limiting Kent State, the top-hitting team in the MAC, to only two runs on six hits. The Eagles were led offensively by senior Matt Moffett who went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI. Junior Derek Lehrman also hit 2-for-4 at the plate.
“Both pitchers were right on but Chad Wagler was a little bit better,” said EMU Assistant Coach Chris Hoiles. “Fischer threw a great game, but we needed just one more big hit to tie the game. Both teams played well.”
Kent State senior pitcher Chad Wagler picked up his MAC-leading 10th win of the year going 8.2 innings with seven strikeouts while allowing only one run on six hits. The Golden Flashes were led by Kurt Eichorn who hit 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored.
Kent State got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning as Andrew Davis hit a shot to center field which sailed over center fielder Trumaine Riley’s head allowing Eichorn to score for the early 1-0 lead.
The Golden Flashes added another run in the bottom of sixth on an Eichorn single to right field plating Joe Tucker for a 2-0 advantage. KSU had the bases loaded but Fischer got the Eagles out of the jam forcing Will Vazquez to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Lehrman led off the top of the seventh inning with a double to left field. Moffett singled to left center to score Lehrman to cutting the lead to 2-1. Aaron Powell followed with another single to move Moffett to third base but the Eagles were not able to capitalize as Isaiah Gainforth hit into a fielder’s choice to end the inning.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Lehrman singled up the middle. Jeff Hehr then flied out to the shortstop and KSU closer Ryan Davis came in and struck out Moffett to end the game.
No. 6 Eastern Michigan will take on the loser of the No. 2 seed Central Michigan versus the No. 5 seed Miami game on Thursday, May 25, at 10 a.m.
