The 2006 Mid-American Conference Baseball Championship will be held May 24-27 at Kent State University's Schoonover Stadium. The double-elimination tournament will feature the top six teams in the conference as they compete for the MAC tournament title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The top two teams from each division automatically qualify, while the remaining two teams will be the schools with the next best conference winning percentage. Seeding will be determined as follows: the division champion with the best conference winning percentage will be the No. 1 seed; the other division champion will be the No. 2 seed. The final four seeds (3-6) will come from teams with the next best conference winning percentage.
EAGLES FACE KENT STATE IN MAC TOURNAMENT: For the first time since the 2004 season, the EMU baseball team will compete in the 2006 Mid-American Conference Tournament held May 24-27, at Schoonover Stadium in Kent, Ohio. The Eagles enter the tournament as the No. 6 seed and will take on the No. 1 seed and host Kent State University. Ironically, the last time the two squads met was in the 2004 MAC Tournament in which EMU defeated KSU 10-6 in the winners bracket but later fell 7-4 to the Golden Flashes in the championship game. Kent State leads the all time series against Eastern Michigan with a 39-37 mark.
ABOUT THE GOLDEN FLASHES: Kent State enters the tournament with an overall record of 35-17 and a MAC record of 19-7 for the MAC Eest Division title. The Golden Flashes are led by senior Drew Saylor who leads the MAC with a .386 batting average, with 64 runs scored, 88 hits, 67 RBI and 14 home runs. Kent State is coached by Scott Stricklin, who is in his second season.
EMU MAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY: Since the MAC tournament’s inception in 1981, the EMU baseball team has competed six times: 1981-83 and 2002-04 accumulating a 14-7 overall record. The Eagles won the tournament in 1981 (3-0 record), 1982 (3-0 record) and 2003 (4-1 record). The 2003 tournament was hosted by Kent State and saw the Eagles knock off Miami, 6-5, to advance to the NCAA Regionals.
