YPSILANTI, Mich. – A late ninth inning rally by the Eastern Michigan University baseball team was not enough as the Eagles were swept, 3-2, by visiting intra-state rival Western Michigan here on Senior Day at Oestrike Stadium.
EMU finishes the regular season with a 27-25 record and 14-15 MAC mark. The Eagles earned a sixth seed in the upcoming MAC Tournament and will play the #1 seed and host Kent State Golden Flashes.
With the Eagles trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning, senior Isaiah Gainforth, in his final at bat at Oestrike Stadium, hit his fourth home of the season over the center field wall to cut the WMU lead to 3-2. For the game, Gainforth went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Senior Mark Rasmussen picked his fifth win of the season going 7.0 innings with two strikeouts for Western (30-20, 16-9 MAC) while junior Kyle Maunus led WMU offensively going 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.
Western got on the board first in the top of the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly by Zach Gentile to score Joe McDonald giving the Broncos a 1-0 lead.
The Broncos added another two runs in the top of the seventh inning on three hits for a 3-0 advantage.
With two outs, Gainforth’s home run pulled EMU within one run, 3-2, but it was not enough as Josh Ivan flied out to center field to end the game.
Eastern Michigan heads to the MAC Tournament hosted by Kent State University at Schoonover Stadium, May 24-27. The Eagles will square off with Kent State on Wednesday, May 24, at 1 p.m.
