Baseball Falls to Western Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped its second consecutive game, 9-2, to visiting intra-state rival Western Michigan here Friday night at Oestrike Stadium.

For the second day in a row, EMU (27-24, 14-11 MAC) could not get the bats going against the Western Michigan pitching staff. The Eagles were led again by freshman Aaron Powell, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one run scored. In the last two games, he is 7-for-7 at the plate. Senior Tim Gray picked up his first loss of the season going 1.2 innings with one strikeout, a walk and four earned runs.

Senior R.C. Dickerson led WMU (29-20, 15-9 MAC) offensively going 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored while freshman Ethan Hollingsworth picked his ninth win of the season going 5.0 innings with three strikeouts.

Western came out early and tallied four runs on four hits to take a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning.

The Broncos added another run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly to take a 5-0 advantage.

EMU finally got going in the bottom of the seventh inning as Trumaine Riley singled down the right filed line to score Josh Ivan. Isaiah Gainforth hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Powell and cut the WMU lead to 5-2.

Western responded in the top of the eighth with another four runs on four hits to blow the game open for a 9-2 lead. The Broncos held the EMU scoreless in the final two innings to notch the victory.

Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan will play the final game of the three-game set at Oestrike Stadium Saturday, May 19, at 5 p.m. The Eagles will honor its four seniors: Isaiah Gainforth, Tim Gray, Matt Moffett and Will Stewardson.
