TOLEDO, Ohio – The second day of the 2006 Mid-American Conference Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Championships wrapped up Friday afternoon at the University of Toledo track facility. Cool temperatures and heavy rains again pelted the area for the second straight day limiting the times and distances of many of the athletes.
The EMU men are tied for second in the seven-team field with 51 points. After eight events, the EMU women stand in a tie for seventh place with 23 points in the 12-team competition. Akron’s women (49) and Kent State’s men (57) remain in first place for the team championships.
Only eight events produced champions on Friday with the bulk of the competition on the track consisting of semifinal rounds for Saturday’s finals. EMU scored championship points in the men’s shot put, long jump, decathlon and 3,000-meter steeplechase events, while the women’s squad recorded points in the long jump and the heptathlon.
Senior Dave Adamek took home the individual championship in the shot put with a distance of 58 feet-8.5 inches, while freshman Mike Barnes placed seventh with a heave of 50 feet-3.5 inches. Sophomore Edouard Joliveau added to the Eastern total by taking third in the long jump with a leap of 24-0.75 (7.33m). Rounding out the scoring was a trio of Eagles in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as junior Corey Nowitzke (2nd - 8:54.26), junior Kevin Naughton (6th - 9:15.26) and junior Alan Walker (7th - 9:23.11) turned in top 10 finishes.
On the women’s side, sophomore Ashley McCullough turned in a runner-up performance in the long jump with a mark of 20-10.5 (6.36m) to pick up eight points. In the heptathlon, seniors Chrystal Dooley and Shamarie Giscombe placed third and fifth, respectively.
