Men's Golf Closes Regular Season With Fifth-Place Finish

AKRON, Ohio –
Senior Korey Mahoney and freshman Chris Ross earned top-25 finishes as the Eastern Michigan University men’s golf team finished tied for fifth seventh place Sunday at the 2006 FirstEnergy Intercollegiate on the par 72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club North Course in Akron, Ohio.

The Eagles finished with a two-over 290 to finish with a weekend tally of 883 (295-298-290). Ball State took the team title with a score of 10-under 854, missing the tournament scoring record by six strokes (849). Eastern Kentucky (867) and Kent State (872) rounded out the top-three.

Mahoney and Ball State’s Patrick Wilkes-Krier tied the tournament record with a seven-under 65 on the final day, becoming the sixth and seventh players to card a 65 and the second and third to do so in two years. Wilkes-Krier set the tournament record with a 15-over 201.

Mahoney finished the weekend in second place with a eight-under 208 (71-72-65) while Ross finished in 21st place with a three-round total of seven-over 223 (77-73-73). Senior Peter Sauerbrei tied for 37th with a 228 (75-77-76), junior Bryan Haase carded a 229 (73-80-76) for 39th and sophomore Graham Hill tied for 48th with a 233 (76-76-81).

The Eagles return to action next weekend when they travel to Indianapolis, Ind., for the 2006 Mid-American Conference Men’s Golf Championships, May 4-6, on the par 72, 6,994-yard championship course at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course.
