Late error in the ninth gives EMU the victory

YPSILANTI, Mich. – A late run in the bottom of the ninth inning pushed the Eastern Michigan University baseball team past visiting Northern Illinois, 9-8, here Friday night at Oestrike Stadium.

Sophomore Josh Ivan made up for a late inning miscue to help EMU (22-17, 10-6 MAC) to its 17th home victory of the season. With two outs in the top of ninth, Ivan threw the ball away on a routine grounder that would have ended the game but instead allowed NIU’s (21-21, 8-8 MAC) Bobby Stevens to score tying the game at 8-8. Ivan came right back and led off the bottom of the frame with a clutch double down the right field line. A throwing error by Husky pitcher Mark Badgley on a Jeff Davis bunt allowed Ivan to score the winning run from second base.

Sophomore Steve Bradshaw nearly hit for the cycle going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run, two doubles and a single for three RBI and three runs scored. Davis also picked up the win in a relief effort going 1.0 innings with two strikeouts and one walk.

Stevens also led Northern Illinois going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Two EMU fielding errors aided NIU to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Huskies also added another run in the third to go up 3-0.

EMU got on the board with a run in the second inning on a fielder’s choice by Matt Moffett to score Bradshaw. After another NIU run in the top of the fourth, Bradshaw smacked his second home run of the season driving in Jeff Hehr to tie the game a 4-4.

The Eagles took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Derek Lehrman hit a three-run blast for a 7-4 advantage.

The Huskies would not go away and responded with two runs on three hits in the sixth inning to trim the EMU lead to 7-6.

Bradshaw once again came up with a big hit notching his second double of the game to score Hehr for an 8-6 lead.

NIU got another run in the eighth to close the gap at 8-7 and tied the contest at 8-8 in the bottom of the ninth on Ivan’s error. However, a lead-off double and throwing error sealed the victory for the Eagles in the bottom of the frame.
