UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team shot a 297 in the final round to run away with the 2006 Rutherford Intercollegiate championship with a 54-hole total of 892 (300-295-297) at the par 72, 6,859-yard Penn State Blue Course. The victory marks the third invitational title the Eagles have won this season.

Eastern led after the first day of play, carding an even-par 595 during a damp and rainy Saturday. The Eagles overall score of 28-over-par 892 was nine strokes better than runner-up George Washington in the 15-team field. VCU finished in third place at 902 while Penn State and Miami (Oho) tied for fourth place at 903.

Senior Korey Mahoney, who fired a 141 on Saturday, shot a two-over 74 to hold on for medalist honors with a one-under par 215. The victory marks the East Lansing, Mich. native's fourth invitational win as a collegian and his second title this season after winning the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate, Feb. 27-28.

Mahoney was joined in the top 10 by teammate Graham Hill, who tied for seventh place at seven-over 223 (77-74-72). The Eagles also had a quality performance from freshman Chris Ross who are tied for 17th with a 226 (76-76-74). Other EMU scorers include Peter Sauerbrei with a 228 (79-72-77) and Bryan Haase with a 234 (80-76-78).

The Eagles return to action April 29-30 when they travel the 2006 FirstEnergy Intercollegiate at the Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. This year’s event will be EMU’s last tune-up before heading to the 2006 Mid-American Conference Men’s Golf Championships on May 4-6.
