Eagles fall to BGSU for second straight day
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – For the second time in as many days, the EMU softball team dropped an extra-innings game to the Mid-American Conference East Division leading Bowling Green State University team here at the BGSU Softball Field. The Eagles dropped today’s game, 3-2, in nine innings and Saturday’s contest 2-1 in 10 innings. Despite the loss, Lauren Clark (Flat Rock, Mich.-New Boston Huron) belted her 11th home run of the season, breaking the EMU single-season record.
Clark’s home run was the 11th on the season and second in the two-game weekend series with BGSU. Today’s round tripper gave her sole possession of the EMU single-season home run record which was held by Melissa Drouillard who hit 10 in 1996 and teammate Nikki Denman (Toledo, Ohio-Sylvania Southview) who tied the record in 2004.
The homer was the 17th career long ball by Clark and moves her into a tie for second on the EMU career home record run list, tying former teammate Liz Flack. Clark remains two home runs behind Drouillard’s 19 career homers.
Falcon ace Liz Vrabel (16-9) limited the Eagles to five hits, however four went for extra bases. Vrabel pitched the extra-inning complete game for the second day in-a-row.
EMU pitcher Michelle Lloyd (Akron, Ohio-Archbishop Hoban) threw 8 and 1/3 innings allowing to earned runs but picked up the loss.
Clark’s first inning solo home run gave the Eagles a 1-0 advantage until the bottom of the fourth when BGSU plated two runs. EMU knotted the game at 2-2 in the seventh after an RBI double by senior outfielder Kelly Gulliver (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park).
Back-to-back singles followed by an error gave BGSU the bases loaded with one out in the ninth. The Falcons took advantage with a walk-off RBI single up the middle.
The Eagles (20-23; 8-6 MAC) return home following a 12-game road trip Friday, April 28, for a twinbill with MAC foe Miami University. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
