Clark Ties Single-Season Home Run Record in Extra-Innings Loss

Eagles fall to BGSU in 10 innings, 2-1
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – It took 10 inning for the Mid-American Conference East leading Bowling Green State University to put away the Eastern Michigan University softball team 2-1 here today at the BGSU Softball Field. Despite the loss, junior shortstop Lauren Clark (Flat Rock, Mich.-New Boston Huron) hit her tenth home run of the season, tying the EMU single-season record.
Clark’s tenth round tripper tied the school record held by Melissa Drouillard who hit 10 in 1996 and teammate Nikki Denman (Toledo, Ohio-Sylvania Southview) who tied the record in 2004. The homer was the 16th career long ball by Clark and moves her into a tie for third on the career home record run list, tying Denman. Both remain three home runs behind Drouillard’s 19 career homers.
Clark finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, run scored and an RBI.
Denman pitched the first 7 and 2/3 innings allowing one run (unearned). Junior pitcher Aimee Woodrum (Cincinnati, Ohio-Sycamore) relieved Denman, throwing the final two innings allowing the winning run to cross in the tenth inning.
The Falcons Liz Vrabel threw all ten innings for BGSU, allowing just one earned run. She improves to 15-9 on the season.
EMU took a one run lead in the first after Clark’s solo shot, but BGSU tied the game in the bottom half of the first after a fielding error allowed a run to score.
The game remained tied until the 10th inning when an RBI single up the middle plated a Falcon who reached on a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.
The Eagles (20-22; 8-5 MAC) will return to action Sunday, April 23, for the final game of the two-game weekend series with the Falcons. First-pitch is set for 1 p.m.
