DELAWARE, Ohio. – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team carded a 304 in the final round of the Rocket Spring Classic to capture a 21-stoke victory in the 11-team field at the Dornoch Golf Club. The Eagles posted a school-record score of 900 for the tournament (297-299-304). The University of Toledo finished second with a 921 (303-314-304), and Ohio University placed third with a team total of 946 (307-329-310).
The tournament victory marks only the fifth invitational title that EMU has captured in the program's nine-year history. EMU's last championship came at the 2003 EKU Lady Colonel Classic, April 11-12, 2003, when the Eagles defeated Toledo in a one-hole playoff to lay claim to the top spot.
EMU finished with three players in the tournament’s top four, including medalist Catherine Fortin at 217 (70-74-73) and runner-up Katie Strawser at 226 (73-80-73). Fortin was the only golfer in the tournament to shoot a round under par in the tournament. With the victory, Fortin becomes just the sixth Eagle to claim medalist honors and the first since Kelly Picket won the 2002 Bronco Invitational, April 8-9, 2002, with a 36-hole total of 154.
Freshman Stephany Fleet tied for third place after firing a 227 (76-73-78) while sophomore Paola Sanchez turned in a 233 (78-75-80 for a seventh place tie. Freshman Courtney Aili rounded out the lineup with a 246 (88-77-81). Competing as an individual was junior Kelly Boogaard, who fired a 246 (78-84-84) for a 25th place showing.
The Eagles will return to action at the 2006 MAC Championship Thursday-Saturday, April 27-29, at Walden Ponds Golf Course in Indian River, Ohio.
