Eagles inprove to 4-4 in MAC action
YPSILANTI, Mich.—The Eastern Michigan University women’s tennis team upended MAC rival Bowling Green, 5-2, in a close dual match played here Friday outdoors at the Chippewa Club.
With the victory, EMU is now 9-9 overall and 4-4 in league play while Bowling Green falls to 13-9 (2-5 MAC).
EMU came out and took the all-important doubles point outlasting Bowling Green in three close matches to take an early 1-0 lead. The No. 1 team of Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany-Albertus Magus Gymnasium) and Yana Parfenyuk (Ominsk, Russia-School #64) held off the Bowling Green’s team Romer/Nussbaum, 8-7, while the No. 2 squad of Aditi Krishnan (Merkhem,Ontario-Canada-Markville Secondary School) and Elizabeth Syrova (Montreal, Quebec, Canada-Ecole Secondaire Jean XXIII Dorval notched a 8-5 victory over the BGSU tandem of K. Jakupcin/Meister, 8-5. Laura Fernandez (La Vega, Dominican Republic-Colegio Inmaculada Concepcion) and Flavia Micatia (Rio de Janerio, Brazil-Cejo Terejopolis RJ) outlasted BGSU’s A. Jakupcin/Volle at the No. 3 spot to sweep the doubles competition.
During singles competition, four out of the six singles matches went the distance with the Eagles taking three of them. Parfenyuk remained a perfect 6-0 in MAC competition as she came from behind to take out Andrea Meister, 6-2, 0-6, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot. Krishnan dropped the first set and came back to defeat Jenna Nussbaum, 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 at the No. 2 position while Frankowski held on against Heidi Romer, 0-6, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 3 spot. Catherina Bestahorn (Ebenhausen, Germany-Iching Gymnasium) took the first set against BSGU’s Kelsey Jakupcin, but was unable to hold on and lost, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 at the No. 5 spot. Syrova was also downed by Ashley Jakupcin at the No. 1 position. Fernandez defeated Libby Harrision in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Eastern heads to Toledo on Sunday, April 23, for its final regular season Mid-American Conference dual match at 1 p.m.
