Eagles conclude regular season with 4-4 MAC record
YPSILANTI, Mich.—The Eastern Michigan University women’s tennis team fell to MAC-rival Toledo, 4-3, in a close dual match played at UT Varsity Courts. Junior Yana Parfenyuk (Ominsk, Russia-School #64) finished the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record in Mid-American Conference singles play.
EMU concludes the regular season with a 9-9 overall record and 4-5 mark in league play while Toledo improves to 14-6 (5-3 MAC).
In doubles competition, the all-important doubles point went to Toledo as the Eagles came up shot in two of the three matches to fall behind 1-0. The No. 1 team of Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany-Albertus Magus Gymnasium) and Yana Parfenyuk (Ominsk, Russia-School #64) lost a hard fought match to Toledo’s team Paravicini/Cueva, 9-7, while the No. 3 squad of Laura Fernandez (La Vega, Dominican Republic-Colegio Inmaculada Concepcion) and Flavia Micatia (Rio de Janerio, Brazil-Cejo Terejopolis RJ) also lost a close battle to VanderMolen/Horning, 8-6.
Aditi Krishnan (Merkhem,Ontario-Canada-Markville Secondary School) and Elizabeth Syrova (Montreal, Quebec, Canada-Ecole Secondaire Jean XXIII Dorval notched a 8-3 victory over the UT tandem of Belsky/Rivero at the No. 2 spot.
During singles competition, Parfenyuk defeated Jenny Belsky, 6-2, 6-4, for a perfect 8-0 MAC mark at the No. 4 spot. Frankowski took out Viviana Rivero, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 3 position while Fernandez defeated Sarah VanderMolen in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. However, EMU lost two three set matches at the No. 2 and No. 5 positions perspectively as Krishnan fell 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to Myriam Cueva while Catherina Bestahorn (Ebenhausen, Germany-Iching Gymnasium) lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to Sarah Horning. Syrova also fell to Euncie Paravicini, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot.
Eastern will compete at the Mid-American Conference tournament hosted by Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, April 24-28.
