Women's Tennis Gets Back On Track With Win at NIU

Eagles improve to 2-1 in MAC action with 7-0 blanking of the Huskies

ROCKFORD, Ill.—The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team made it two straight Mid-American Conference wins with a 7-0 dual-match victory over Northern Illinois University here Saturday at the Clock Tower Inn Tennis Center.

After dropping a 7-0 non-league decision Friday to a University of Notre Dame team that is ranked second in the nation, Head Coach Craig Capelli's Eagles came back with the win over NIU. Eastern defeated Ball State, 6-1, last Saturday (March 25). EMU is now 7-7 overall and 2-1 in league play. Northern drops to 4-12 and 0-2.

The Eagles started the win over NIU with a bang, winning all three doubles matches for a quick 1-0 lead. EMU's No. 1 doubles team of Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany-Albertus Magus Gymnasium) and Yana Parfenyuk (Ominsk, Russia-School #64) defeated NIU's team of Jenny Edner and Dora Delqudillo, 9-7, while the No. 2 team of Aditi Krishnan (Merkhem,Ontario-Canada-Markville Secondary School) and Elizabeth Syrova (Montreal, Quebec, Canada-Ecole Secondaire Jean XXIII Dorval) defeated Northern's Megan Brooks and Chrissy Nagel, 8-3, and the No. 3 squad of Laura Fernandez (La Vega, Dominican Republic-Colegio Inmaculada Concepcion) and Flavia Micatia (Rio de Janerio, Brazil-Cejo Terejopolis RJ) notched a forfeit win.

The Eagles then moved smoothly through singles, winning four matches in straight sets and two by forfeit. Syrova started things off at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Edner. Krishnan then bounced Delqadillo, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2. Frankowski defeated Northern's Brooks at No. 3, 6-0, 6-1, with Parfenyuk notching a 6-0, 6-0 win over Nagel at No. 4. The Eagles then took the final two singles matches on forfeits, with Catherina Bestahorn (Ebenhausen, Germany-Iching Gymnasium) winning at No. 5 and Fernandez taking the forfeit win at No. 6.

Eastern is idle until heading to Buffalo Friday, April 7, for a Mid-American Conference dual match.
