Eagles fall to 2-2 in MAC action with setback
BUFFALO, N.Y.—The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team fell, 5-2, in close dual match to Buffalo in Mid-American Conference play here Friday at the Village Glen Tennis Center.
EMU is now 7-8 overall and 2-2 in league play. Buffalo improves to 9-4 (1-2 MAC).
Buffalo came out and took the early advantage winning two of three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. The No. 3 squad of Laura Fernandez (La Vega, Dominican Republic-Colegio Inmaculada Concepcion) and Flavia Micatia (Rio de Janerio, Brazil-Cejo Terejopolis RJ) notched a 8-3 victory over the UB tandem of Stan/Fischer but the EMU No. 2 team of Aditi Krishnan (Merkhem,Ontario-Canada-Markville Secondary School) and Elizabeth Syrova (Montreal, Quebec, Canada-Ecole Secondaire Jean XXIII Dorval fell to Novaceanu/Jacob, 8-3, to tie the competition a one match all. The Eagles' No. 1 team of Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany-Albertus Magus Gymnasium) and Yana Parfenyuk (Ominsk, Russia-School #64) lost the deciding match in a tough hard fought tiebreaker to Buffalo's Ortman/Nenova to lose the doubles point.
During singles competition, Buffalo started off notching victories at the No. 6 and No. 1 slots as Tina Jacob took out Micati, 6-4, 6-1 and Andreea Novaceanu downed Syrova, 6-2, 7-5 respectively. EMU responded as Frankowski rallied from a set down to beat Natalie Dean, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot and Parfenyuk defeated Katrin Fischer at the No. 4 position, 6-2, 7-5. The Bulls clinched the match as UB's Miglena Nenova held off Krishnan in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. EMU's Fernandez also fell to Smaranda Stan at the No. 5 spot to give Buffalo the 5-2 victory.
Eastern heads to Akron on Saturday, April 8, for a Mid-American Conference dual match at 1 p.m.
