EMU Sixth After First Day of MAC Wrestling Championships

Competition wraps up tomorrow afternoon, with finals and consolation rounds slated to begin at 12 p.m. CST.

DEKALB, Ill.-Four-time defending MAC Tournament champion Central Michigan jumped out to a 17-point lead after the first day of competition at the 2006 MAC Wrestling Championships here at Northern Illinois' Convocation Center.
In the meet-opening 125-pound division, top-seeded CMU sophomore Luke Smith advanced to the second-round, where set up a bout with EMU freshman Sean Clair in the second round. Clair, ranked fourth in the MAC, advanced via a bye in the weight class. NIU's Pat Castillo, tied for the top league spot in the latest MAC rankings, advanced to face Kent State's Chad Sportelli in the division's second round. Castillo defeated Buffalo's Eric Piedimonte by technical fall in 4:53. Consequently, the top four wrestlers in the 125-pound division advanced to meet in the 8 p.m. semifinals.
In the semis, Smith defeated Clair in a 4-3 decision to advance to Saturday's final round. Castillo needed overtime to corral Sportelli, but prevailed in a 5-3 decision.
At 133, CMU junior Jason Borrelli defeated Ohio's Caleb Metcalf in a 5-4 decision, setting up a semifinal bout with Eastern Michigan senior Phillip Plowman. Plowman advanced via a bye in the first round. On the bottom side of the bracket, Ohio freshman Terry Jackson, ranked third in the league, tallied an 11-0 major decision over NIU's Chad Van Diver. Jackson's win set up a 2-3 matchup in the semifinals with Buffalo's Mark Budd.
Plowman responded with the meet's first major upset, defeating Borrelli, 10-6, to advance to the final round. Budd also took care of business, collecting a 5-3 decision over Jackson.
Ohio's Albert Madsen, ranked fourth at 141, defeated Kent State's Drew Lashaway in the first bout of the weight class. NIU's Josh Wooton, the top ranked grappler in the division, was his opponent in the semifinal round. EMU freshman Nick Conklin advanced to the second round with a 6-5 decision over the Bulls' Cliff Smith, setting the stage for a second-round tilt with CMU's Brandon Carter, who is ranked second in the latest MAC individual rankings.
In the nightcap, Wooton and Carter both advanced to the finals. Wooton forced Madsen into a fall at the 3:45 mark, while Carter collected a 6-5 decision over the upset-minded Conklin.
At 149, Buffalo's Dana Gingerich won his first MAC match all year, as he pinned Ohio 's Aaron Gomoll at the 1:13 mark of the match. Gingerich moved on to face 2005 MAC Champion Mark DiSalvo in the semifinals. In the second match, NIU's Mike Grimes advanced with a 3-1 decision over the Eagles' Ahmed Joumaa. He set up a bout with Kent State senior Jason Bake in the semifinal round.
DiSalvo's 17-7 major decision over Gingerich propelled him into the semifinal round, while Bake collected a 10-8 decision over Grimes.
Top-ranked Andy Keller (CMU) advanced to the second round at 157 with a convincing 6-1 decision over NIU's Aaron Owen. In the second match, Buffalo's John Cummings continued on his path of postseason success that saw him win two JuCo All-American honors, as he beat Eastern Michigan's Quinn Guernsey, 5-0.
Frerichs upset Keller in the semifinal round in a 3-1 overtime decision. He will face Gross in the divisional final, who collected a 5-3 decision over Cummings.
In the ensuing 165-pound weight class, the Chippewas' top-ranked Trevor Stewart quickly advanced to the semifinal round with a :58 fall over EMU's Chad Roush. Stewart's win to set up a bout with Kent State's Jason McGee, currently ranked fourth in the MAC. Buffalo's Mickey Moran followed with a 10-1 major decision against Eastern Michigan 's Josh Lewis.
Stewart defeated McGee with a 4-2 decision in the semifinal round, and will face NIU's Johnny Galloway in the finals, who disposed of Moran with a 4-2 decision in his first action of the evening.
At 174, the Chippewas' Brandon Sinnott defeated EMU's Josh Lewis to advance to the semis. In the following bout, NIU's Danny Burk tallied an 8-5 decision over Ohio's Ryan Knapp, setting up a semifinal match with the KSU's Aaron Miller.
Sinnott held serve with a 5-1 decision over Ragusa to advance to the finals. He will face Miller, who used a 5-4 decision over Burk to coast into Saturday's final bout.
In the ensuing 184-pound slate, the Bobcats' Brian Cesear moved on to the second round with a 10-2 major decision over EMU's John McClure. Buffalo's Garrett Hicks followed with a 4-1 decision over NIU's Alex Nelson.
Kent State's 16th-ranked Alex Camargo moved within one victory of setting the all-time record for individual wins in Golden Flashes history with a 10-2 major decision triumph over Cesear in the 184-pound semifinals. Collecting that accolade in the next match will be a difficult task, as he will face nationally-ranked counterpart Christian Sinnott in the finals, who upended Hicks in the following heat, 10-5.
Huskie 197-pounder Derek Hunsinger clinched a matchup against top-ranked Wynn Michalak of Central Michigan after claiming a 5-1 decision over EMU's Tony Lyssiotis in the quarterfinals. In the other bout, the Golden Flashes' Ardian Ramadani advanced with a 6-4 triumph over Ohio's Nick Terbay, setting up a bout with UB's two-time MAC champion Kyle Cerminara in the semis.
Top seeds advanced in the round of four, as Michalak claimed a 6:37 fall victory over Hunsinger, and Cerminara fought off a Ramadani surge for a 2-1 overtime decision. The respective results set up a bout that will have individual national championship implications. Michalak and Cerminara are ranked No. 1 and 2 in the nation, respectively, at 197.
Michalak was Cerminara's lone setback this season, as the CMU sophomore earned a third-period takedown and was able to keep the lead despite a late flurry of action that narrowed the final score to 3-2 during the dual meet season. Cerminara, ranked second in the nation, is looking for his third MAC Championship to cap off a season that has seen him set school records for career wins, career dual meet wins, career dual meet takedowns and consecutive matches won.
The top four heavyweight grapplers advanced to the semifinals after CMU's Bubba Gritter ousted the Eagles' Jake Wood in a 13-4 major decision. The Bulls' Harold Sherrell followed with a 4-3 decision over Ohio's Marcus Adelman.
Another upset highlighted the session-ending 285-pound competition. Kent State heavyweight Jermail Porter defeated 13th ranked Gritter in a 7-1 decision to advance to the tournament finals. Buffalo's 16th ranked Harold Sherrell followed with a fall in 3:23 over NIU's No. 20 grappler Joe Sapp.
Competition wraps up tomorrow afternoon, with finals and consolation rounds slated to begin at 12 p.m. CST. Final rounds for True Second Place will immediately follow finals.
