Eagles finish sixth as a team

Senior 133-pounder Phillip Plowman (Sunfield, Mich.-Lakewood) turned in a runner-up finish here Saturday to lead the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team in the Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championships hosted by Northern Illinois University.Central Michigan won the team title with 102.5 points to 75.5 for second-place Kent State. Buffalo was third with 60 points followed by Northern Illinois with 56.5, Ohio with 25.5 and EMU with 13.5.
Plowman had a bye in the first round and then upset No. 1 seed Jason Borrelli of Central Michigan, 10-6, to qualify for the championship final against Buffalo's Mark Budd. Budd recorded a win on an injury default and Plowman had to settle for second with Borrelli third.
With his runnerup finish, Plowman will be one of 19 MAC wrestlers moving on to the NCAA Championships, March 16-18 in Oklahoma City, OK.
The only other wins by EMU wrestlers came at 125 and 141 pounds. Freshman Sean Clair (Turtle Creek, Penn.- Plum) won one match at 125 before finishing fourth while junior Nick Conklin (Milton, Wisc.-Milton) won his first-round match at 141 before bowing out on a pin and a default by injury.
