Baseball Completes Doubleheader Sweep of Bowling Green

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team swept a doubleheader with Bowling Green State University here Sunday afternoon at Oestrike Stadium. In the opener, sophomore Jeff Fisher threw a complete game four-hitter as the Eagles won by a scored of 2-1. In the night cap the EMU bats came to life as the Green and White cruised to the 9-3 victory to take two of three games in the weekend series.

Junior Brian Blackburn led the Eagles (5-11, 2-1 MAC) offensively going 1-for-4 driving in the only two RBI for the Eagles. Bowling Green (9-10, 1-2 MAC) was led by Kurt Wells who went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

In the opener, the Eagles threatened in the second inning as senior Matt Moffett reach via a walk and advanced to second on a junior Derek Lehrman single to center. BGSU’s Greg Becker pitched out of the two-out jam though getting junior Trumaine Riley to strike out to end the inning.

In the very next frame the Eagles were able to break into the score column first as sophomore Jeff Davis led off the third with a walk and then stole second base. He advanced to third on a throwing error and Hehr followed with a walk and a steal of his own. Blackburn plated both runs with a two RBI double into the right field gap to make it 2-0 EMU. But BG’s Becker righted the ship to retired to next to EMU batters and end the threat.

In the eighth, the Falcons got to Fisher, as a Kurt Well’s single to left scored Eric Lawson to pull BGSU back within a run at 2-1. Fischer was able to get out of the one-out jam, retiring the next two batters via fly outs.

Bowling Green would go quietly in the ninth inning as Fisher went the distance to pick up his fourth win of the season, allowing just four hit while striking out nine Falcons in the 2-1 victory.

In the nightcap, Senior Will Stewardson got his first win of the season hurling 4.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts and one walk while giving up only four hits. Sophomore Jeff Hehr led the Eagles from the plate going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.

EMU took an early lead in the top of the first inning as Davis stole home on a double-steal putting the Eagles up 1-0. Sophomore Steve Bradshaw doubled to right-field scoring two more runs and freshman Aaron Powell drove in another run on a sacrifice fly to put the Eagles up 4-0.

BGSU responded with two runs in the top of the second closing the gap to 4-2 but EMU answered in the bottom half with two runs of their own on RBI singles by Josh Ivan and Hehr increasing the Eagle lead to 6-2.

Moffett drove in Powell putting EMU up 7-2 but BGSU got the run back in the fifth to pull within four runs, 7-3. The Eagles later added another two runs in the fifth and sixth innings cruising to a 9-2 victory.

The Eagles continue the home stand Tuesday afternoon, March 28, with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Oestrike Stadium against Wayne State University.
