Gymnastics Finishes Fourth at MAC Championships

Eagles post a 192.075 as Western Michigan Claims the title with a 193.800
KALAMAZOO, Mich.-- The EMU women’s gymnastics team finished in fourth place at the 2006 MAC Gymnastics Championships with a score of 192.075. Western Michigan took home the team title at University Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. with a mark of 193.800. Freshman Zu Vuong, the 2006 MAC Freshman of the Year, finished third in the all-around with a total of 38.600 while junior Rebecca Fuss placed fifth with a score of 38.550.
Central Michigan finished second with 193.175 points, while co-regular season champion Kent State finished third (192.700). Northern Illinois took fifth overall (191.225), while Bowling Green (190.850) and Ball State (188.225) rounded out the seven-team field.
On the vault, Monica Lucas, Jolene Worley and Zu Vuong tied for 12th on the vault with a 9.725. On the uneven bars, Worley and Jennifer Charlebois were the highest placing Eagles with a sixth place tie after posting a 9.700. Fuss and Vuong posted marks of 9.625 on the balance beam to tie for eighth place. In the last rotation, Fuss, Vuong and Tawna Bennett scored a 9.750 for an 11th place showing.
WMU’s Jennifer Sturgis was tabbed the All-Around champion after compiling a score of 39.100. She also tallied the top score in the balance beam with a 9.850 tally, and owned the top score of 9.875 in the vault competition. Kent State’s Carrie Mayle won the floor exercise with a score of 9.850. On the uneven parallel bars, MAC Gymnast of the Year Cherisse Marier had a meet-best score of 9.775.
The Eagles were recognized for their performances at the conclusion of the meet, as Vuong was named First Team All-MAC while Fuss and Worley were selected Second Team All-MAC.
Eastern Michigan will now await word about any NCAA regional qualifiers, that announcement will be made next week.
