Women's Tennis Edged by Miami in MAC Opener

Eagles drop 4-3 heartbreaker to visiting RedHawks

YPSILANTI, Mich.
— A visiting Miami University women's tennis team spoiled Eastern Michigan University's Mid-American Conference home opener here Friday indoors at the Chippewa Club, taking a 4-3 victory over the Eagles.

The loss dropped the Eagles to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in the MAC heading into a 1 p.m. home dual match against Ball State at 1 p.m. at the Chippewa Club tomorrow, March 25. The win gives Miami a 6-6 overall head and the RedHawks move on to Toledo, Ohio tomorrow for a MAC dual against Toledo.

In Friday's dual, the two teams were tied at 3-all with one match still being contested on the court. That final match, the No. 5 singles contest between EMU's Catherina Bestahorn (Ebenhausen, Germany-Iching Gymnasium) and Miami's Victoria Pulido ended up in a third set after Pulido won the first set, 6-4, and Bestahorn notched a 7-6 win in the second set. Pulido dominated in the third set, 6-0, with Bestahorn battling leg cramps through most of the final set.

EMU started the dual by winning the doubles point, winning both the No. 1 and No. 2 matches. EMU's Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany-Albertus Magus Gymnasium) and Yana Parfenyuk (Ominsk, Russia-School #64) grabbed an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles against the Miami duo of Linda Jirouskova and Katrina Lomidze. Eastern's Elizabeth Syrova (Montreal, Quebec-Ecole Secondaire Jean XXIII Dorval) and Aditi Krishnan (Merkhem,Ontario-Canada-Markville Secondary School) then won an 8-4 decision at No. 2 doubles over Miami's team of Remy Swain and Maura Trauernicht. Miami then broke the Eagles' string with an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles, as Pulido and Leda Pesatova defeated Laura Fernandez (La Vega, Dominican Republic-Colegio Inmaculada Concepcion) and Flavia Micatia (Rio de Janerio, Brazil-Cejo Terejopolis RJ).

Miami won the first two singles matches, with Katrina Lomidze recording a 6-3, 6-1 win over Elizabeth Syrova at No. 1 and Leda Pesatova notching a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Aditi Krishnan at No. 2 singles.

EMU's crew then bounced back with wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, with Vanessa Frankowski taking a 6-2, 6-7, 6-1, three-setter over Linda Jirouskova at No. 3 and Yana Parfenyuk adding a 6-0, 6-4, victory over Miami's Kelly Douple at No. 4.

Miami then closed it out with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Miami's Remy Swain defeated Flavia Micatia, 6-4, 7-6, at No. 6 singles followed by Pulido's win at No. 5.
