Freshman becomes the third consecutive Eagle to win the award

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Eastern Michigan University freshman gymnast Kim-Duyen Vuong (Ottawa-Ontario-De La Salle) was named the Mid-American Conference Gymnast of the Week for the period ending March 20.

The award marks the first time in her career that she has claimed the weekly league accolade. It also is the third consecutive week an EMU gymnast has collected the award, as sophomore Jolene Worley and junior Rebecca Fuss have previously garnered the award.

Vuong had another stellar performance, this time against Bowling Green, capturing her third all around title of the season with a total of 38.675. The cumulative score of 38.675 is her second highest all around total in her brief collegiate career. Individually, Vuong tied for second on the vault with a 9.725 and tied for third on the bars with a 9.625. The Ottawa, Ontario native also finished fourth on the beam (9.600) and tied for fourth on the floor (9.725).

Vuong has had an outstanding first season in Ypsilanti, as the lone EMU freshman gymnast to compete in the all-around in five meets. The Ottawa, Ontario native’s season average of five all-arounds is one short of a regional qualifying score. She currently holds an average of 38.490 in the all around and would rank second in the Mid-American Conference with one more compeition. Zu Vuong ranks in the top two among the conference’s freshmen in vault and beam along with ranking third in floor exercise.

The Eagles’ next action will be the MAC Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich. Saturday, March 25. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on the campus of Western Michigan University.
