Women's Tennis Falls at Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Eastern Michigan University women’s tennis team fell to former MAC rival Marshall, 6-1, here Monday at the Huntington Tennis Club. The Eagles fall to 5-5 on the season, while the Thundering Herd improves to 11-5.
The match was originally slated to be played outside, but about an hour prior to the start time, it was agreed that the with the weather forecast of thunderstorms and 30 mph wind gusts it would be a safe bet to move the match indoors to the Huntington Tennis Club.
Flavia Micati and Laura Fernandez were the only bright spot for Eastern during doubles play as they defeated Marshall’s tandem of Keener/Asel, 8-5, at the No. 3 position. However, it was not enough as the Thundering Herd notched victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots to take the doubles point.
It didn’t get any easier for the Eagles during singles play. Vanessa Frankowski picked up her second win of the week with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over #112 ranked Shannon Brown at the No. 3 position to give EMU its only point of the match. Fernandez also fell in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 10-3 to Jessica Keener in a hard-fought match at the No. 5 spot. Marshal went on to notch victories at the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 positions for the 6-1 vicotry.
EMU begins Mid-American Conference play with a home dual match against Miami University at the Chippewa Club, March 24, at 1 p.m.
