FAIRFIELD, Ohio. - The Eastern Michigan University women’s tennis team nipped Xavier University, 4-3, here Sunday at the Mercy HealthPlex. The Eagles move to 5-4 on the season, while the Musketeers fall to 4-6.
Eastern opened doubles play with a clean sweep of all three matches to take the all-important doubles point. At the No. 1 position, Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany-Albertus Magus Gymnasium) and Yana Parfenyuk (Ominsk, Russia-School #64) defeated the Xavier team of Clary/Courtney, 8-6, while Elizabeth Syrova (Montreal, Quebec-Ecole Secondaire Jean XXIII Dorval) and Aditi Krishnan (Merkhem,Onterio-Canada-Markvile Secondary School) took out XU’s tandem of Potts/Tuchscherer, 8-3 at the No. 2 spot. Flavia Micatia (Rio de Janerio, Brazil-Cejo Terejopolis RJ) and Laura Fernandez (La Vega, Dominican Republic-Colegio Inmaculada Concepcion) defeated Feider/Lohner 8-3.
During singles play, EMU dropped the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 matches. The Eagles responded as Frankowski held on to defeat Xavier’s Jackie Vilines in three sets, 7-5 (5), 1-6, 6-4 at the No. 3 position while Parfenyuk took out Annie Diedalis, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot. Fernandez also defeated Sarah Potts, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6 singles to secure the 4-3 victory.
EMU travels to Huntington, W. Va. for a dual match with former MAC rival Marshall University, March 13, at 10 a.m.
