Gymnastics Claims Eagle Classic Title

EMu wins three-team meet with a score of 190.775
YPSILANTI, Mich.-- The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team jumped off to an early lead at the Eagle Classic only to hold off a late charge to claim the team championship with a mark of 190.775. The tri-meet featured an extremely close finish as squads were separated by just 0.35 of a point. Illinois State placed second with a 190.450 while Rhode Island finished third with a total of 190.425.
The title mark the first-time in the event's three-year history that the host Eagles have won the event. Eastern improves to 8-6 on the season while ISU is now 5-8 and UR 1-8.
Junior Rebecca Fuss had another strong performance capturing her first all around title of the season with a total of 38.525. Individually, Fuss won the balance beam event with a total of 9.675, along with tying for first on the uneven bars posting a score of 9.750. The Orlando, Fla. native also finished ninth on the vault (9.575) and 14th on the floor (9.525).
Sophomore Jolene Worley tied for the championship on the bars with Fuss, recording a 9.750 on the event for the three-way tie with ISU's Amanda Candler. Overall, she finished tied for second in the all-around competition with Rhode Island's Kelly Gurney at 38.100.
Sophomore Tawna Bennett turned in a runner-up finish on the floor with a 9.775 and a tie for third on the vault with a 9.700. Freshman Zu Vuong tied for third of the vault (9.700).
The Eagles are next in action Friday, March 17, when they battle the Bowling Green State University Falcons to close out the 2006 regular season. The event is set to begin at 7 p.m.
