BUFFALO, N.Y. –– The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team came up with three individual wins but it just wasn’t enough as the Eagles fell to the University at Buffalo, 29-12, here Saturday (Feb. 4) in a Mid-American Conference dual. The loss drops EMU to 5-8 overall and 0-4 in the MAC while Buffalo improves to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in league action.
Interim Head Coach John Lange’s Eagles started the dual with a forfeit victory by freshman Sean Clair at 125 pounds. Buffalo won the next match at 133, before EMU’s Nick Conklin disposed of the Bulls' Cliff Smith, 4-3, at 141 pounds.
At 149 pounds, EMU's Jermain Thompson captured his 10th victory of the season, as the match went four overtime periods before Thompson earned a takedown to seal the 5-3 victory. Thompson's win gave the Eagles a 12-3 advantage midway through the dual, but the Bulls charged back by winning the final six matches, including the last four with bonus points.
Buffalo responded as John Cummings defeated Quinn Guernsey, 8-1, and then followed it up with a Mickey Moran decision over Chad Roush, 8-4. Garrett Hicks pushed the Bulls' lead to six after his three 3-point near fall performance helped him to a 17-1 technical fall against John McClure. Kyle Cerminara, the last undefeated 197-pounder in the nation, turned in a quick fall of Tony Lyssiotis in 1:55 to clinch the Buffalo win. Harold Sherrell closed the meet with a technical fall against Jake Wood in the first period.
Eastern returns home next weekend for a non-conference tilt Friday, Feb. 10, against Clarion. Action begins at 7 p.m. in venerable Bowen Field House.
