With the victory the Eagles improved to 6-8 on the season while the Golden Eagles fell to 0-15.
The Eagles opened the match taking an early 6-0 edge in the dual, as Sean Clair picked up the decision as Clarion forfeited the match at 125. EMU pushed the advantage to 12-0, as senior Phillip Plowman pinned Rob LaBrake at the 1:49 mark of the first period, as Plowman improved his record to 6-3 on the campaign.
At 141 pounds, Clarion’s Greg Lewis turned in a 3-2 decision over Nick Coklin. The two wrestlers were tied 0-0 through the first two periods, but Lewis turned in a takedown midway through the third period to claim the win.
In the 149 pound weight class, junior Jermain Thompson improved his record to 11-5, posting a dominating 17-2 technical fall over Derrick Smith. Clarion clawed closer at 157 as Lucas Christopher defeated sophomore Quinn Guernsey by a score of 7-4.
With Eastern leading 17-6 in the match, Chad Roush started out strong at 165 pounds, posting a two-point takedown early in the first period. With time winding down in the first period, Roush capped it off with a pin of Chris Goings at the 2:25 mark to seal the match victory for EMU.
At 175, the Golden Eagles of Clarion University added a major decision by Dave Gardner over EMU’s Josh Lewis. Sophomore John McClure took an early 2-0 lead in the 175-pound weight class match over Dominic Ross but Ross battled back to knot the score at 6 in the third period. Ross took his first lead late in the third period, adding a late take down to put McClure on his back to take 10-8 win.
At 184, the Eagles picked up six-points , to make it 29-13, as Tony Lyssiotis won by forfeit decision.
In the final match up of the evening in the 285-pound weight class, Clarion’s A.J. Brooks got on the board first but the scored remained tied at 2-2 after the first period. Freshman Jake Wood was able to pick up the lone point of the second stanza to take a 3-2 lead, but Brooks quickly regained the lead at 5-3 midway through the final three minutes. Wood got back within a point, 5-4, but was unable to get any closer as time expired.
The Eagles are next in action Thursday, Feb. 18, as they wrap up the regular season hosting Mid-American Conference rival Northern Illinois. The dual is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. inside the Convocation Center.
