Senior fires three-round total of 215 to claim medalist honors

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Senior Korey Mahoney (East Lansing, Mich.-East Lansing) carded a three-round total of 215 (70-71-74) to claim the individual championship and help the Eastern Michigan University men’s golf team move up a spot to finish fourth Tuesday at the inaugural Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate hosted by Francis Marion University.

The Green and White opened the two-day tournament tallying a 306 team total in Monday’s first round and followed with a 306 in the second round to vault themselves into fourth place with a 612 total. With Mahoney's one-over--par 74 today, the Eagles posted a 301 final round tally to finish fourth with a 913 54-hole total.

Mahoney, who was the top finishing Eagle for the third tournament of the year, captured medalist honors with a seven-stroke victory total of 215. After opening with a 70 in Monday’s first round, he posted rounds of 71 and 74 to seal the victory.

Sophomore Graham Hill (Brights Grove, Ontario/Northern Collegiate (Indiana (Pa.)) tied for 14th with a 229 total. After struggling in the opening rounds, posting an 80 and 78, he rebounded with a 71 in the final round to give him a 229 total.

Other Eagle scores included: senior Kevin Ackford (Midland, Mich.-Dow (Michigan State)), tied for 46th with a 235 total (78-77-80), freshman Chris Ross (Dundas, Ontario-Parkside), tied for 48th with a 236 total (78-80-78) and junior Bryan Haase (Interlochen, Mich.-Interlochen (Lansing C.C)) finished 63rd with a 242 total (71-83-78).

With four players among the top 20, South Carolina-Aiken (296-309-295) won the tournament by seven strokes with an 900 54-hole total. Chattanooga (300-306-301) was the runner-up at 907 and host Francis Marion (304-298-309) was third at 911. USCA's Scott Brown took second-place honors with a six-over 222 54-hole total (67-78-77).

The Eagles will continue the spring season with a trip to Orlando, Fla., Saturday through Sunday (March 4-5) for the Orange County National Invitational. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Crooked Cat Course.
