Eagles’ distance medley relay team leads the way with a win
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio
--The Eastern Michigan University men’s tracksters turned in several outstanding efforts here Friday in the first day of the two-day Mid-American Conference Indoor Track Championships hosted here in the Perry Center by Bowling Green State University. The meet will be concluded Saturday, Feb. 25.Kent State grabbed the first-day’s lead with 45 points to 43 for EMU. Rounding out the Friday scores were Kent State in third with 30, Akron fourth with 20, Ohio fifth with nine and Buffalo sixth with six.
The Eagles came up with a great way to finish Day One, easily taking the victory in the distance medley relay, the final event of the day. That relay team of freshman
David Brent (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary’s Catholic), redshirt freshman Adrian Simmons (Romulus, Mich.-Romulus), redshirt freshman Jake Dubois (Jackson, Mich.-East Jackson) and redshirt junior Corey Nowitzke (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) ran 10:00.18 to win the race.In other Friday finals, the Eagles had top finishes from: redshirt freshman
Josh Karanja (Ottawa, Canada-Nepean) with a second-place finish in the 5,000 meters in 14:37.47, junior Dave Adamek (Ridgeway, Ontario, Canada-Ridgeway Crystal Beach) with a third in the weight throw at 63-feet-00.25, senior Matt Pinter (Big Rapids, Mich.-Big Rapids) with a fifth in the weight throw, redshirt sophomore Phil Saffron (Grosse Pointe, Mich.-Grosse Pointe North) with a third in the pole vault at 15-feet-5.5 inches, and redshirt junior Josh Goodrich (Fairlawn, Ohio-Copley) with a fifth-place finish in the pole vault at 14-feet-11.5 inches.The Eagles will also be in good shape for Saturday’s finals with a host of qualifiers from Friday. Roy Shavers (Flint, Mich.-Central) and senior Donnie Young (Archbold, Ohio-Archbold) both qualified for the finals in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. Shavers ran :22.08 in the 200 and :49.09 in the 400 while Young went :22.25 in the 200 and :49.66 in the 400. Senior Bob Colville (San Jose, Costa Rica-Lileo de San Jose) ran a :06.88 time to qualify in the 60 meters and sophomore Eric Alejandro (Pembroke Pines, Fla.-Flanagan) ran a :08.43 clocking to make the finals in the 60-meter hurdles.Competition is set to begin at 11:30 Saturday in Bowling Green.
