THE SERIES: This is the 27th meeting between the two schools and Eastern Illinois holds a 17-9 advantage. The last time the two teams met was the 1966-67 season when the two teams played twice. EIU captured an 81-42 decision, Feb. 4, in Ypsilanti and EMU grabbed a 76-70 win, Dec. 10, in Charleston.

EMU COMEBACK FALLS SHORT: The Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team came up with another gritty performance Wednesday (Feb. 15) at Western Michigan but a three-point shot with just under three seconds left spelled doom for the Eagles in a 67-64 Mid-American Conference West Division setback. With the game tied at 64-all, Western gained control of the ball with 20 seconds left. The Broncos worked it down to 00:04 when senior Brian Snider launched a three from the left baseline that was all net. Eastern’s last-gasp three-point shot from 30 feet was short at the buzzer, giving Western the three-point win. The loss spoiled a great outing by EMU freshman point guard Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich.-Murray Wright) who continues to play like one of the top rookies in the MAC. Medlock connected on all six three-point attempts and finished with 20 points, three rebounds and three assists. Senior John Bowler (Chicago, Ill.-Notre Dame H.S.) added 16 point while sophomore James Matthews (Detroit, Mich.-Murray Wright-Marquette Univ.) added nine points and a career-best nine rebounds.

UP NEXT: The Mid-American Conference will take a weekend off from league action to participate in the Bracket Busters presented by eBay Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17-18. EMU’s assignment in the special midyear tournament involves a trip to Charleston, Illinois to take on the Eastern Illinois University Panthers from the Ohio Valley.

SIZZLING FROM THE ARC: EMU freshman point guard Carlos Medlock has turned in three of the most impressive shooting nights in EMU history over his last three outings. Medlock has made 16-of-19 three-point field goals during that stretch and has scored 22 at BGSU (Feb. 7), 24 at home against Akron (Feb. 11), and 20 at Western Michigan (Feb. 15). He has now made 34-of-82 triples this season for a 41.5 shooting percentage.

LONG TIME COMING: The Eagles were involved in a lot of streak breaking with two consecutive MAC wins, Feb. 1 and Feb. 4. The Eagles snapped a nine-game MAC losing streak this season with an 81-75 win over a visiting Central Michigan team, Feb. 1. Saturday (Feb. 4) the Eagles broke a 12-game MAC-road losing streak (17 games overall), dating back to an 86-82 win at Central Michigan, Jan. 9, 2005, with a 56-43 victory at Ball State. The 43 points by Ball State is the lowest MAC-point total allowed by the Eagles since the 1999-2000 squad won a 68-43 decision at Western Michigan, Feb. 2, 2000, a total of 114 games between 43’s.

HALL OF FAME HELD SATURDAY: The 30th Annual EMU Athletic Hall of Fame, sponsored by the E-Club Alumni Chapter, was held Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, in the atrium of the Convocation Center. The Class of 2005 includes: Tommy Asinga (1994) track; Dan Boisture (1967-73) football coach; Ben Braun (1986-96) men’s basketball coach, Hamilton Morningstar (1940) track and field; Dr. Waldomar Roeser (1970-present) team doctor; Danny Schmitz (1979) baseball; Sara Seegers (1995) softball; and Harold Simons (1968, 1970), basketball player and golf and basketball coach. The induction ceremony began at 10:30 a.m. followed by a luncheon. The latest class of inductees were honored at halftime of Saturday’s EMU-Miami women’s game.

EMU AND EIU TO MEET FEB. 18: EMU will travel to Charleston, Illinois Saturday, Feb. 18, to meet Eastern Illinois University in a non-conference game at 3 p.m.. The matchup resulted from a pool of 100 eligible teams for the BracketBusters presented by eBay national event. As part of the event, EIU will schedule a game at EMU in 2006-07. EIU holds a 17-9 edge in the series and the Panthers won the last meeting, 92-81, Feb. 4, 1967 in EMU’s Bowen Field House.
