EMU will be in action again tomorrow, Dec. 9, at 8 p.m. EST and will face Chicago State University, who lost to host University of California Berkeley, 75-51, in the nightcap.
With the loss EMU falls to 1-6, while the Toreros improve to 5-4 and have won three straight.
The Eagles trailed by three, 75-72 with 1:36 left. The Toreros missed two free-throws before sophomore Carlos Medlock connected on a three-pointer to knot the game at 75-75 with :13 second left. However, an EMU foul with :06 seconds remaining led to two USD points. Medlock raced the length of the court for a last second shot that didn’t fall.
Freshman Brandon Bowdry scored a career-high 19 points, with Medlock adding 12. Freshman Devon Dumes scored all 10 of his points in the second half to help EMU erase a 19 point deficit. USD’s Ross DeRogatis led all-scores with 28 points, including seven three-pointers.
The teams traded baskets to open the game to deadlock the score 6-6 with 18:03 in the half. The Toreros pulled away on an 18-2 run, which included three three-pointers by DeRogatis, putting the Eagles down 24-8 with 12:04 on the clock. EMU responded with an 11-4 run cutting the lead to 28-19 with 7:38 to play. USD used sharp three-point shooting to expand its lead to 19, 42-23 at the 3:29 mark. However, the Eagles used a 13-2 run to close the half and shrink the lead to nine, 44-35 at the break.
USD shot 60.7 percent (17-of-28) from the field and hit seven first half threes, including four by DeRogatis to lead all scores with 14. The Eagles knocked down 7-of-7 free-throw attempts with five from Bowdry, who led EMU with 11 first-half points.
The Eagles continued their run into the second half, tying the game at 50-50 with 12:59 to go. USD would not relinquish the lead as they ran off the next seven points, but Eastern would not quit as it tied the game 75-75 with :13 seconds left but never led in the second half.
Today’s game marked the return of EMU second-year head coach Charles E. Ramsey to Cal, where Ramsey served as an assistant coach from 1996-2001, under EMU Hall-of-Famer and current Golden Bear head coach Ben Braun.
