YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Eastern Michigan University baseball team is currently volunteering its time throughout the local community. During the late fall and early winter months, the team will partake in Warm the Children, St. Joe’s Pediatrics (PEDS) Extended Care, Lincoln Little League Camps, and the Local 190 Christmas Party.

Over the past two weeks, 19 players have had the opportunity to meet with local children of families facing challenges to assist them in purchasing new coats, hats, boots, and gloves for the coming winter months at Meijers retail stores.

“It truly is a privilege to be able to spend time with these wonderful local children,” said junior first baseman, Steve Bradshaw (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer). “Experiences such as these are a great way to meet and spend time with local children which is also instrumental in our growth as student-athletes.”

Additionally to Warm the Children, eight players along with the coaching staff will spend time in the PEDS Extended Care.

“I am looking forward to sitting down and spending time with the people at PEDS Extended Care,” said junior pitcher Dan Puls (Alpena, Mich.–Alpena). “I believe that we as visiting players warm the patients’ day which also makes us value how lucky we really are

In addition, twelve players will partake in volunteering time at the Lincoln Little League Camps.

“Volunteering at the Lincoln Little League Camps is a great way to communicate with local youth,” said senior pitcher George Biddle (Newark, Ohio-Newark Catholic). “The kids really listen and look up to our players and participating in this event allows our program to serve as role models for these kids.”

Lastly, the entire EMU baseball team will help with the Local 190 Plumber’s and Pipe Fitter’s Christmas party, Dec. 10. The team and coaches believe that volunteering in the community is a great way to give back especially during the holiday season.

All of these opportunities will provide a foundation for the team to continue to grow together and individually while strengthening the baseball program and the community.
