KENT, Ohio – Kent State University running back Eugene Jarvis rushed for 155 yards and the Golden Flashes' defense intercepted four passes in a 14-6 victory over Easter Michigan University here Friday night (Nov. 17) at Dix Stadium. The loss dropped the Eagles to 1-10 overall and 1-6 in Mid-American Conference, on the other side of the field the victory pushed Kent State's record to 6-5 and 5-2 in the MAC.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Andy Schmitt led the Eagles offensively, going 10-of-21 passing for 104 yards and two interceptions. He also led the team in rushing, picking up 40 yards on the ground. Senior Eric Deslauriers caught seven balls for a game-high 116 yards. Defensively for EMU, senior linebacker Michael Richardson led the team in tackles with 14 (nine solo and five assisted).
Senior place-kicker Andrew Wellock connected on a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter for the Eagles' only points of the game. With his two field goals, the Green, Ohio native moved into sole possession of second place of the MAC career field goal leaders with 69, surpassing Miami's Gary Gussman and Toledo's Rusty Hanna mark of 68.
To go along with Jarvin's 155 yards on the ground, KSU sophomore quarterback Julian Edelman threw for 188 yards with one touchdown. Andre Kirkland led the Flashes defensively with 13 tackles, while defensive back Gary Ham picked off two passes and classmate Daniel Muir added another that he returned five yards for a touchdown.
Kent State struck first, as Edelman hit Najah Pruden down the sideline for a 68-yard touchdown just seven minutes into the game. Reid Macko followed with the PAT to give KSU a 7-0 advantage.
The Eastern Michigan offense struggled in the opening 30 minutes, advancing only as far as the Kent State 30-yard line with 9:20 to go in the second quarter. Unfortunately, the drive was capped of by a missed 47-yard field goal by Wellock.
`Neither team was able to crack into the score column the rest of the period, as Kent State headed into the locker room with a 7-0 edge at the break.
With both offenses struggling to put points on the board, the Kent State defense took it upon itself to increase the lead. On the Eagles' opening possession of the second half, Colin Farrell hit Schmitt as he released the ball, allowing Muir to pluck it out of the air and rumble in from five-yards out to make it 14-0 with 11:34 left in the third quarter.
After an injury knocked out Schmitt midway through the third period, redshirt sophomore Tyler Jones was called on to move from the tailback position to his natural position at quarterback. But Jones did not fair any better as Gary Ham picked off Jones twice in the second half, to secure the win.
In the fourth quarter the Eagles were able to get on the scorebard as Wellock, who missed a 40-yarder midway through the third period, connected on a 25-yard field goal and 39-yarder for the Eagles' only scores.
