Wellock Named a Top Three Star of the Week

Senior place-kicker singled out by Lou Groza Award committee
PALM BEACH, Fla.—Eastern Michigan University senior place-kicker Andrew Wellock (North Canton, Ohio-Green) was named one of the Top Three Kicking Stars of the Week by the Lou Groza Award committee for the week ending Oct. 23.
Wellock, a runner-up for the Lou Groza Award in 2004 and a member of the 2006 preseason Groza Watch List, won the weekly award after booting field goals of 38, 43 and 48 yards in a 17-13 win over a visiting University of Toledo team, Oct. 21, in Rynearson Stadium. Wellock has turned in 18 games multiple field goal games during his career.
The 5-foot-11 Wellock entered the 2006 season as EMU's career field-goal leader and has improved that mark by hitting 10-of-13 this season for 63 total. He is currently tied for fourth in the Mid-American Conference career field-goal records. Northern Illinois kicker Steve Azar (2000-03) had 73 career three pointers while Toledo's Rusty Hanna (1989-92) and Miami's Gary Gussman (1984-87) had 68 each. Wellock is tied with former Ball State kicker John Diettrich (1983-86) at 63.
